At 21 years of age, Brittni Paiva is a preeminent female ʻukulele player from Hawaiʻi. Affectionately referred to as the ʻukulele darling, Brittni is a native of Hilo, on the Big Island. She is a multi-award winning, multi-instrumentalist with a prodigious gift who is wholeheartedly embraced by a global audience.

Ticket sales will be limited to 100, so it will be a very cozy and intimate show. Opening for Britni, will be Kohli Calhoun. Doors open at 7PM. Show starts at 8pm.

Housing Works, 33 1/3, and Hālāwai invite you to join author Dan Kois and music writer Nate Chinen as they discuss the fascinating life and afterlife of Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwo’ole, and Kois’s book, Facing Future. Entertainment will provided by traditional Hawaiian ukulele players Andy Kūlana Wang and Jason Poole.

Dan Kois is the author of Facing Future. He’s a film critic for the Washington Post and the Village Voice. He was the founding editor of Vulture, New York magazine’s culture blog, and also writes for New York, the New York Times, Slate, and other publications. He lives in Arlington, Virginia.

Nate Chinen writes about music for the New York Times. He’s also a columnist for JazzTimes and coauthor of Myself Among Others, the autobiography of impresario George Wein. His essay “(Over the) Rainbow Warrior: Israel Kamakawiwoʻole and Another Kind of Somewhere” will appear in the forthcoming anthology Pop When the World Falls Apart: Music and Conflict.

Winner of a Hawaii Music Award for Comedy Album, annual fixture at O‘ahu’s Talk Story Festival, and a keynote presenter at the 2009 National Storytelling Conference, Kathy Yogi Collins shares Hawaiian legends and spreads the word of “pidgin pride” at the Lincoln Center 2010 Out of Doors Festival this summer. She wrote and produced the acclaimed Death Comedy Jam following the death of her husband – moving, irreverent and poignant comedic monologues on widowhood.
