NLM Hula Basics

Start: 09/13/2010 - 7:00pm

End: 09/13/2010 - 8:00pm

Hula is the art of Hawaiian dance, a choreographed interpretation of a poetic text, or mele, which combines pictorial hand and arm gestures with rhythmic lower-body movements. Far more than just a dance, hula expresses all that we see, hear, taste, touch, smell and feel. For many Hawaiians and Hawaiians-at-heart, the hula is also a way of life.

Beginning this fall, hula instructor Lisette Kaualena Flanary of Nä Lehua Melemele will be offering beginner hula classes at Dance Theater Workshop in Chelsea. An introduction to the basic hands and footwork of the dance, the class will concentrate on the fundamentals of hula dancing, rather than choreography, with strong emphasis on movement, posture, and relaxation. This class level is open to everyone – from those who have no hula experience to seasoned hula dancers – who wish to strengthen their foundation of the basic fundamentals of the dance.

Classes will be held on Monday evenings beginning on September 13, 2010. There will be 12 classes this fall and regular attendance is encouraged.

Dates: September 13, 20, 27
October 4, 11, 18, 25
FREE Dance Salon: 3 companies, drinks, noshes, dancing and a cemetery tour

Start: 10/03/2010 - 3:00pm

End: 10/03/2010 - 6:00pm

Sunday, October 3 · 3:00pm - 6:00pm

Marie-Christine Giordano Dance Studio
220 25th St buzzer 202
(studio is #102, straight ahead on left)
Brooklyn, NY

More Info Ever wonder how dancers do what they do; what goes in to the making of a dance? Interested in knowing some basics about the history, significance and some of the gentle and expressive movements of the Hawaiian hula, and/or the martial arts inspired form of Japanense yosakoi? Ever fantasize about being locked into a romantic Victorian cemetery with a bunch of dancers?

Salon/open house showcase Sunday, 10/3, 3 - 6p, in artist's lo...ft on 25th St, Greenwood Heights, Brooklyn (south end of Park Slope): 3 dance companies showing works of under 10 minute each in styles from hula to contemporary, with wine, beer, noshes and other refreshments available before, in between and after.

At the end of the block lies romantic Green-Wood Cemetery, with easy access to graves of Leonard Bernstein, Louis Moreau Gottschalk and Louis Comfort Tiffany; the Civil War and Brooklyn Theater Fire memorials all within a 5 min walk of the gate. Adjacent to Bernstein's grave, the statue of Minerva stands atop Battle Hill, her hand raised in salute to the Statue of Liberty directly facing her in the Harbor. One of NYC's hidden gems (think New Orleans cemetery with hills leading to the highest point in Brooklyn). The tour of this area on Aug 29 was a blast!

As it was then, the tour on Oct 3 will be offered, following the showing, by Steve Estroff, Green-Wood's Outreach and Education Coordinator, but this time will make use of the Cemetery's trolley as well to reach more remote areas of the site. The tour, which normally costs $15 per person will be offered for$10 pp cash, payable at the beginning of the tour, with proceeds donated to support the salon and its artists. Since the Cemetery closes at 5p, those taking the tour will receive a private experience with Steve who will let tour members out with his own key. More refreshments and free-style social dancing for all who wish to participate will follow the tour.

Did you hear that Napua Davoy is doing her first musical performance in trio at MILES CAFE WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 6TH?

Really . . . I thought she died from musical theatre?

No, she's a tough old bird. If it doesn't kill you . . . it'll make you stronger.

Oh, that's why Ira Gitler said,

"As you may expect her versatility is a great asset, with her experience as an actress definitely a positive force on her singing. She can swing, wax nostalgic and be seductive or operatic."

And only $10 tickets, quiet policy and they serve liquor and sushi - hello?

I gotta check this out.

See you there!
