Peter Rockford Espiritu
Artist Biography
Peter Rockford Espiritu is the Executive & Artistic Director of Tau Dance Theater (TDT), the only professional western form dance/theater company based in Hawaii founded by a native Hawaiian. Established in 1996, TDT is a non-profit, 501(c)3 charitable arts organization. The work maintains cultural identity in the face of globalization, and functions as an artistic mirror, reflecting the impact of what Hawaii and Oceania was, has become, and where it is headed. TDT is anchored in indigenous consciousness, traditions and dance, creating a solid foundation to focus on native identity and spirituality while supporting responsible evolution and global village awareness through neo-Oceanic fusion. This native movement-based viewpoint produces specific artistic images that are unique to Hawaii’s geographical location, Pacific Island and Oceanic culture, and native pluralism.
